Is Online Therapy Right for You?

Honestly? It works well for most people and most issues. If you’re dealing with anxiety, panic attacks, depression, low mood, relationship problems, work stress, burnout, anger management, grief, trauma, PTSD, low self-esteem, addiction, eating difficulties, ADHD-related challenges, or identity questions, online counselling is a strong option.

A few situations where in-person therapy might be the better starting point: if you’re in an acute crisis or you simply prefer being in the same room as your therapist. Mind and Body Works offers in-person appointments at centres across Dublin and in Galway, so you’re not locked into one format.

For the vast majority of adults, online sessions through a secure video platform provide the same therapeutic depth as sitting in a consulting room. Research consistently supports this.

Why Online Therapy Works

Privacy on your terms. No bumping into someone you know in a waiting room. No explaining where you’re going. You connect from wherever feels most comfortable, whether that’s your bedroom, your car during a lunch break, or a quiet corner of your house after the kids are in bed.

A wider choice of therapists. Location stops being a barrier. Instead of being limited to whoever practises nearby, you can choose from a much broader network of specialist therapists across Ireland. Need someone trained in CBT for insomnia? A psychosexual therapist? A counsellor who works in Spanish, Italian, French, German, or Portuguese? Online makes that possible.

Easier to actually show up. No commute, no parking, no rushing across Dublin in traffic. You save time and travel costs, which means you’re more likely to stick with your sessions. That consistency matters more than most people realise.

Confidential and secure. All therapy takes place over encrypted, confidential video calls. Your privacy is protected at every step, and the platform is designed to meet clinical standards for safe, remote therapeutic work.

Accessible from anywhere in Ireland. Whether you’re in Cork, Galway, a rural town, or abroad (excluding the USA and Canada), you can access the same quality of counselling and psychotherapy available at our Dublin centres.

Who You'll Be Working With

You’ll work with an experienced, fully accredited therapist matched to your specific needs. Every online counsellor holds membership with recognised professional organisations, including IACP, IAHIP, PSI, COSRT, ICP, and BACP. They are trained across a wide range of therapeutic approaches: psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), EMDR, couples and relationship therapy, psychosexual therapy, clinical supervision, and psychological assessment.

Most are based in Ireland. A small number are located overseas due to specialist expertise, particularly in psychosexual therapy and multilingual counselling.

Each therapist has a detailed profile where you can read about their background, training, and areas of specialism. You browse, you choose, and if the fit isn’t right, you can switch.

What Does a First Session Look Like?

This is the part that stops a lot of people. The not-knowing. So here’s what actually happens:

You book a session online. Most clients are booked within 24 hours, and appointments are available Monday to Saturday, daytime and evening. Our administration team will contact you to walk through a simple onboarding process and answer any questions.

Your therapist will then reach out by phone before your first session to make sure you’re set up, comfortable with the technology, and clear on what to expect. They’ll also send you a copy of their client contract and GDPR statement.

The session itself is typically 50 minutes via secure video. You don’t need special equipment. A stable internet connection, a laptop or phone with a decent camera, and a private, comfortable space are all it takes.

The fee is listed on each profile page, so you’ll know the cost per session before you book. Some health insurance plans provide cover for therapy, so it’s worth checking your specific policy. Cancellations within 24 hours must be paid for.

FAQs

Will online therapy actually help me?

Yes. Research shows online therapy can be as effective as face-to-face treatment for a wide range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and relationship difficulties. The therapeutic approach and the quality of your connection with your therapist matter far more than whether you’re in the same room.

How do I choose the right therapist?

Browse our therapist profiles and filter by the issues you’d like to work on, their therapeutic approach, availability, and language preference. Each profile outlines their qualifications, experience, and areas of specialism. If the match doesn’t feel right, you can switch.

What if I don’t click with my therapist?

That happens, and it’s completely fine. The therapeutic relationship is the foundation of good therapy. If it doesn’t feel right, get in touch with us and we’ll help you find a better fit.

How private is it?

All online therapy is conducted over a secure, confidential video platform. Nobody will know you’re in therapy unless you choose to tell them. The anonymity and privacy is actually one of the main reasons clients prefer it.

What does it cost, and does insurance cover therapy?

Fees are set individually and listed clearly on each profile. Some health insurance plans and employee assistance programmes (EAP) provide cover for counselling services, so check with your provider. Receipts are issued for all sessions.

Is my therapist qualified?

Every therapist at Mind & Body Works is fully qualified and a member of at least one recognised professional body, including IACP, IAHIP, PSI, CORU, COSRT or BACP. All are fully insured and engage in regular clinical supervision. If you ever have a concern, each professional body has a formal complaints procedure, and you can also contact the directors of Mind and& Body Works directly.

Can adolescents access online counselling?

Yes. Online therapy is available for adolescents under 18, but only through a parent or legal guardian. Your counsellor will explain how this works before therapy begins.

Can I access online therapy from outside Ireland?

Mind and Body Works offers services to individuals and couples in Ireland and internationally, excluding the USA and Canada. Sessions are available in English, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.

What equipment do I need?

Just a stable internet connection and a laptop, tablet, or smartphone with a camera. A larger screen is easier on the eyes for longer sessions, and a comfortable chair helps. No special software or downloads are required.
