Counselling Experience and Areas of Interest
David brings broad experience to his work as a therapist, shaped by many years supporting people through distress, uncertainty, pressure, and change. Before training as a psychotherapist, he worked as a mental health nurse in Ireland and Australia, supporting people with a wide range of mental health, emotional, and life challenges.
He has experience supporting people with stress, anxiety, low mood, burnout, relationship difficulties, addiction, low self-esteem, family conflict, life transitions, and the pressure that can come from carrying too much for too long.
He has a particular interest in working with people who carry significant responsibility in their work or personal lives, including those navigating burnout, identity, self-worth, and the emotional impact of always having to keep going.
Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach
David works from an integrative and humanistic perspective and is trained in pluralistic psychotherapy. He does not believe there is one single approach that works for everyone. Instead, he works with each client to shape therapy around what feels meaningful, useful, and relevant to them.
At the heart of David’s approach is the therapeutic relationship. He believes therapy is most helpful when a person feels comfortable, accepted, and genuinely understood. He offers a space that is warm, thoughtful, and grounded, where clients can speak openly, reflect honestly, and begin to make sense of what they are experiencing.
His practice is informed by CBT, acceptance and commitment therapy, existential therapy, motivational interviewing, and his broader interest in somatic-based therapy and play therapy. Depending on what is helpful, therapy may involve exploring patterns, developing coping strategies, reconnecting with values, understanding emotional responses, or making space for difficult feelings and experiences.
Clients have described David as down to earth, transparent, and easy to talk to. He places importance on helping clients understand the purpose of the work, including why a technique, question, or therapeutic approach may be useful. His aim is for therapy to feel clear, collaborative, and respectful.
