Counselling Experience and Areas of Interest
Across more than 10 years of work in mental health, including university counselling, private psychotherapy practice and inpatient mental health nursing, Ash has supported people from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences to explore many of life’s concerns. These include anxiety, chronic stress, and depression; identity, belonging and authenticity; childhood and early experiences; life transitions and questions of meaning; neurodivergence; sex and sexuality; and patterns of thinking and relating that may limit our freedom to live in greater alignment with our needs, values and sense of self. His approach is trauma-informed, LGBTQIA+ affirmative and sex-positive, and he welcomes the whole of you into therapy, including the parts of you that are yet to be met.Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach
What’s it like to work with me?
As a heart-led, relational and person-centred therapist, I work with adults to understand and embrace more of who they are, so that they may feel freer to choose a life that reflects their needs, values, desires and authentic sense of self. I believe we each have an inner capacity to sense what we need and how we want to live, although internalised beliefs, fears and expectations can sometimes make that harder to hear or trust.
With you, I aim to co-create a supportive, trusting and curious relationship where you feel genuinely heard, understood and cared for, and able to explore who you are, where you have come from and where you’re going. It is a space where you can bring whatever is happening in your life, without judgement or pressure to hide, abandon or contort parts of yourself to fit expectations about who you should be or how you should live.
Working together, we might approach your thoughts, feelings and behaviours with curiosity, exploring the meaning they may hold and bringing less conscious patterns, beliefs or internalised messages into greater awareness. This may also involve making sense of past experiences or relationships that continue to shape the present, while making space for feelings to be felt without always needing to analyse, explain, solve or make sense of them. At times, we may slow down and pay attention to your thoughts, feelings and bodily experience as they arise, helping us find language for what you are experiencing and understand more clearly what may be happening for you.
Rather than seeing therapy as a process of fixing what is wrong with you, I see it as an opportunity for self-inquiry, self-discovery and greater self-acceptance. Our work together may involve noticing what it is like to be you in the here and now, using experiential activities that invite awareness and perspective, or exploring practical ways to help you feel more resourced to live your life, your way.
Throughout our time together, I aim to honour the whole of who you are and support you to reconnect with your own needs, values and sense of direction - making meaningful choices and living with greater authenticity, freedom and self-respect.
