Counselling Experience and Areas of Interest

Paul has substantial experience working with both individuals and couples who present with a diverse range of relational and sexual concerns. His areas of expertise include assisting clients who are experiencing low sexual desire and desire discrepancy; helping those experiencing erectile unpredictability, rapid or delayed ejaculation, or anorgasmia. Additionally, he works with concerns related to fetishes, obsessive and intrusive thinking and out of control sexual behaviours, including  those relating to pornography use. He also has experience of working with people affected by childhood and adult sexual trauma. Beyond his clinical work, Paul has served as a group facilitator for many years. In this capacity, he has guided psychotherapy students to explore and develop both self-awareness and social awareness within a dynamic group setting. His experience also extends to the corporate sector, where he has coached management teams, executives on a variety of relational, organisational and strategic issues. Furthermore, Paul has worked individually with clients navigating career changes and other significant life transitions or developmental challenges. He integrates his broad coaching expertise into his approach to therapy, enriching the support he offers to clients facing a wide spectrum of personal, interpersonal and professional concerns.

Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach

Paul’s therapeutic approach is integrative, and his perspective is biopsychosocial, incorporating techniques primarily from cognitive-behavioural, systemic and psychodynamic theories. However, because every client and their needs are unique, he also draws on a range of other therapy modalities including narrative (social constructionist) therapy, Gestalt therapy, transactional analysis, mindfulness, and trans-theoretical methods. Paul believes that every person has inherent potential for meaning making and choiceful self-direction, and those fundamental existential-humanistic principles underpin all his work. Paul endeavours to meet every client with empathy, kindness and non-judgemental curiosity where they are at, and to work collaboratively and open-mindedly with them at a pace that allows them to feel safe to open to their vulnerabilities. He believes his interactive way of working provides clients with a healthy developmental space and a reparative emotional experience that allows them to understand and accept themselves, their challenges and their incongruities, and helps them to reframe their cognitions and perspectives regarding their issues and relationships. Along with working with clients’ stress, esteem, anxiety, depression, loss, trauma, addictions, and other issues, he has substantial experience of helping individuals and couples with a range of relational and sexual issues.

Couples Work

With couples, Paul works with both partners to foster a deeper understanding of any relationship conflicts, and supports them in exploring the intrapsychic, interpersonal, and intergenerational dynamics that may be contributing to and sustaining their difficulties. Through this shared awareness, Paul coaches couples in developing more effective communication skills and helps them negotiate their relational needs. His aim is to assist couples in restoring and enriching their connection and intimacy, while also encouraging them to acknowledge and embrace their individual differences.

Working with Psychosexual Issues

Paul provides psychosexual therapy to both individuals and couples, addressing a broad spectrum of psychosexual concerns. His work is dedicated not only to easing the distress that these issues may cause but also to reducing the direct impact of the underlying causal problems themselves. Paul works closely with clients during sessions to explore and address their concerns. However, the effectiveness of the therapeutic process is strongly influenced by clients’ active participation outside of sessions. Whether dealing with relational or psychosexual difficulties, achieving positive outcomes relies hugely on clients’ commitment to and completion of any home tasks assigned as part of the therapy. This collaborative and proactive approach helps to support meaningful and lasting change.

Qualifications and Accreditation

Paul is a fully qualified psychotherapist, psychosexual and relationship therapist, and coach. He holds MSc degrees in both psychotherapy and coaching, reflecting a strong academic underpinning in these fields. In addition, he holds a London Diploma in Relationship and Psychosexual Therapy, and is a certified Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) practitioner. Beyond these core trainings, Paul has additional post-graduate qualifications in several key areas including Gestalt group facilitation, Tavistock leadership consulting, and innovative strategy and design thinking. As a fully accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) and registered member of the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT), Paul maintains high professional standards. He strictly adheres to the ethical guidelines of both bodies, and engages in ongoing professional development and regular supervision to ensure the highest quality of care for clients.

Paul’s fee per session is €90 for individuals and €120 for couples
