Psychotherapy Training and Accreditation

Maureen holds an MA in humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (Clinical) from Carlow IT, an Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapy from the Tivoli Institute.  She also holds a degree in Social Science from University College Dublin. Maureen is a fully accredited member of IACP (Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) and abides by their code of ethics.

Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach

Maureen believes that we are shaped by our past and present experiences which may determine how we see ourselves in the world.  She also believes that sharing these experiences in a safe space, where the person feels supported can help with healing and growth. Maureen is a psychodynamic therapist and she adopts a humanistic and integrative approach where the person is at centre of the therapeutic process.   Maureen sees every person as a unique individual; therefore, she tailors different approaches to suit each individual. These approaches include psychodynamic theory, attachment theory, humanistic and integrative, person centred, gestalt and CBT. Maureen places an important emphasis on the therapeutic relationship, and works collaboratively with the person so he or she can gain a better understanding of their issues and how it impacts their everyday life. Maureen believes in providing a safe, empathetic, and compassionate space for her clients where they can share their experiences and be themselves. She feels her role as a therapist is to facilitate the client to express themselves without fear of judgement and to develop a better sense of self.  Maureen's aim is to see the client flourish and develop tools and strategies to use outside the therapy space and for them to reach their full potential. Having worked with marginalised groups in society in the past, she believes that therapy should be accessible to all who wish to avail of it.

Counselling Experience and areas of Interest

Maureen completed her training with the Tivoli Institute and Carlow IT. Post qualification, she worked as a therapist in Let’s Get Talking Dublin, which is a non-profit, community counselling & psychotherapy service. While working in that service, she worked with people experiencing work issues, family breakdown, anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, sexual identity, autism diagnosis and relationship issues. Prior to becoming a therapist, Maureen worked in Dublin Simon homeless services, primarily in emergency accommodation where addiction to drugs and alcohol were the main issues people presented with. She has over 10 years’ experience working with adults with ASD, and intellectual and physical disabilities.  She advocated on their behalf in relation to human rights, education, training, citizen rights and access to services within their own community. Maureen has completed a master’s thesis exploring the lived experience of parents with children with ASD in relation to accessing psychotherapy. She has also completed research evaluating education and training in the traveller community and the barriers involved. Maureen's areas of interest include anxiety, family difficulties, autism, abortion, workplace issues, self-care, trauma, grief and loss, stress, sexuality, self-esteem, and depression.
