Counselling Experience and Areas of Interest

Alina is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist with eight years of experience working with adults, children and families across public health services, including the HSE, as well as private and charitable settings.

She works with individuals experiencing a range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including loneliness, shame, fear, depression, anxiety and worry, parenting difficulties, the impact of caring responsibilities, stress, overwhelm, low self-esteem and grief.

She supports clients who may be experiencing difficulties associated with life transitions, grief and loss, relationships, isolation, work-related stress, neurodivergence, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and the impact of trauma and complex trauma.

Alina recognises that each person’s experiences are unique and takes time to understand the individual context of the difficulties they are experiencing. Her areas of interest include understanding emotional experiences, relational patterns, the impact of past experiences on present-day life, and supporting clients to develop a deeper understanding of themselves.

Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach

Alina places great value on the therapeutic relationship, recognising it as an important foundation for therapeutic change. She aims to create a space where clients feel understood, heard and able to explore their experiences openly and at their own pace.

In therapy, Alina works collaboratively with clients to explore and understand their emotions, thoughts and patterns of relating. This includes paying attention to patterns that may emerge in clients’ relationships outside of therapy, as well as those that develop within the therapeutic relationship itself. Exploring these patterns can help clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their ways of relating to others.

Alina may also invite clients to explore their early experiences and relationships with their parents or caregivers. Our early relationships can influence the ways in which we learn to understand ourselves, relate to others and respond to our emotional experiences. Exploring these experiences can help clients understand how aspects of their past may continue to influence their lives in the present. However, this does not mean that therapy needs to focus primarily on childhood or relationships with parents; rather, these experiences are explored when they are relevant to the client’s current difficulties and therapeutic goals.

Alina draws upon a range of therapeutic approaches in her work, including Psychodynamic Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Person-Centred Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Her approach is integrative and individualised rather than prescriptive. She draws on the perspectives, techniques and skills from these approaches according to what is most relevant and helpful for each client.

Psychotherapy Training and Accreditation

Alina is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist and is registered with the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). She completed her Doctorate in Counselling Psychology at Trinity College Dublin and holds a Master of Science in Applied Psychology.

She has completed Level 2 training in Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), as well as Emotion-Focused Skills Training, and continues to develop her therapeutic knowledge and practice through ongoing professional training.

Alina was born in Kazakhstan and raised in Ireland. She speaks both English and Russian fluently. Her own experience of multiculturalism informs her understanding of identity, culture and belonging, including the experience of feeling connected to more than one place and, at times, to neither fully. Where relevant to the client’s experience, she brings this understanding and sensitivity to her therapeutic work.
