Terenure Counselling & Psychological Services

Mind and Body Works offers counselling and psychotherapy for people living in Terenure and the surrounding south Dublin area. Our three dedicated therapy centres in Dundrum, Donnybrook and Wicklow Street are each easily accessible from Terenure, with our Dundrum location being particularly convenient. You can also access our full range of services through online therapy if that suits your circumstances better.

With over 120 therapists on our team, we provide individual counselling, couples work, family therapy, and support for children and teenagers. We also offer low-cost counselling for students, part-time workers and those on reduced incomes.

Why People in Terenure Seek Counselling

You might have been considering therapy for a while now. Perhaps something specific has brought things to a head, or maybe there’s just a persistent sense that life could feel different with the right support.

According to Aware’s 2024 national survey, three in four Irish adults have experienced anxiety, and one in five have received a diagnosis of depression. These aren’t distant statistics. They describe people in Terenure, in your workplace, possibly in your own household. Yet many continue managing alone, unsure whether their difficulties warrant professional help.

They do. There’s no severity threshold you need to cross before counselling becomes worthwhile. If something’s weighing on you enough that you’ve looked up therapy services, that’s reason enough to explore further.

Our Approach to Therapy

Counselling at Mind and Body Works isn’t about being told what to do. It’s a collaborative process where you and your therapist work together to understand what’s happening and what might help.

Your first session focuses on getting oriented. Your therapist will want to understand your current situation, what’s prompted you to seek support, and what you hope might be different. They’ll also be assessing whether they’re the right fit. This matters. Research consistently shows that the quality of the therapeutic relationship predicts outcomes more than any particular technique.

Sessions typically last 50 minutes and happen weekly, though we can adjust this to suit your schedule and needs. Some people find that a handful of sessions provides clarity on a specific issue. Others prefer longer-term work that goes deeper into patterns established over years.

What You Might Be Dealing With

People from the Terenure area come to Mind and Body Works for all sorts of reasons. Situations we see regularly include:

Stress that won’t shift. You may have tried the usual advice. Exercise, better sleep habits, cutting back on caffeine. When tension remains, showing up as irritability or wakefulness at 3am when your mind won’t settle, therapy may be able to support you in understanding your stresses and what might be contributing to them.

Relationships under strain. In long-term relationships, communication can become defensive or distant over time. You may find that arguments often circle the same ground without reaching a resolution. If you are sensing that you and your partner are living parallel lives rather than connected ones, therapy can help you to break this cycle, either individually or through couples therapy.

Grief and loss. You may be grieving the loss of a loved one. You may be in the process of letting go of a relationship, a career path, or a version of yourself you thought you’d become. Whatever you are carrying, we are here to support you. Therapy can offer space to acknowledge your loss, to be supported, listened to and heard, without judgement.

Low mood or anxiety. If you are experiencing a heaviness that makes ordinary tasks feel like a huge effort,  or have constant worries that consume your thoughts,  or you’ve started avoiding things you used to manage fine, you may be experiencing low mood or anxiety. Therapy can help to shift these persistent cycles.

Major life changes. Becoming a parent, facing redundancy, navigating divorce, adjusting to retirement, all of these life transitions can leave you feeling unsure of who you are now or what comes next. If you are struggling through a major life change, therapy can offer you space to reflect on the impact that these changes may be having on your sense of self, your identity or your role in family life.

Types of Therapy Available

Our therapists are trained in various evidence-based approaches, and will draw on methods suited to your particular situation.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) examines the connections between thoughts, emotions and behaviours. Research from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence supports CBT as an effective treatment for anxiety and depression, helping people identify and challenge thinking patterns that maintain distress.

Psychoanalytic and psychodynamic approaches explore how early experiences shape present difficulties. If you’re interested in understanding the deeper roots of your patterns rather than focusing purely on symptom relief, these approaches may suit you.

EMDR helps process traumatic memories that remain distressing. Originally developed for PTSD, EMDR is now used for various trauma-related difficulties.

Person-centred therapy offers an accepting, non-directive space where you determine the focus of sessions. Some people find this approach particularly helpful when they need to be truly heard.

Couples counselling provides a structured space for partners to communicate more effectively, understand each other’s perspectives, and work through conflict or disconnection.

Professional Credentials

All Mind and Body Works therapists are members of recognised professional bodies such as the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP), the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (IAHIP), or the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI).

This matters because it means verified training, adherence to ethical codes, ongoing professional development, and accountability if concerns arise. When you’re sharing vulnerable parts of yourself, knowing your therapist meets professional standards provides important reassurance.

When In-Person Isn’t Practical

Maybe your work schedule makes consistent daytime appointments impossible. Perhaps you have young children at home and arranging childcare is complicated. Or you simply prefer the privacy of speaking to someone from your own space.

Online therapy offers access to the same qualified professionals without travelling anywhere. Sessions happen through secure video platforms, maintaining the same confidentiality standards as in-person appointments. For many concerns, video-based therapy proves just as effective as face-to-face work.

What Holds People Back

Only around one in ten people access counselling for mental health support, despite far higher rates of need. Several barriers commonly stand in the way.

Cost concerns. Private therapy requires financial investment. Mind and Body Works offers low-cost counselling for those experiencing financial difficulty, including students, part-time workers and people who are unemployed.

Uncertainty about the process. Not knowing what therapy involves or how to choose a therapist can feel paralysing. Our admin team at 01 677 1021 can talk you through options and help match you with someone appropriate.

Cultural reluctance. Irish culture has traditionally valued managing things yourself. But seeking professional support when something isn’t working is practical, not weak. You wouldn’t avoid seeing a physio for a persistent injury.

Feeling your problems aren’t “bad enough.” Therapy isn’t reserved for crisis situations. Many people attend while functioning well outwardly, precisely because they want to address things before they escalate.

How do I make an appointment?

You can browse therapist profiles on the Mind and Body Works website to find someone whose background and approach appeals to you. Each profile details their specialisms, qualifications and availability.

Alternatively, contact us by email at enquiries@mindandbodyworks.com or phone 01 677 1021. Mention your availability and give a brief indication of what you’re hoping to work on, and we can suggest suitable therapists.

We’ll do our best to match you with someone appropriate, though this depends on therapist availability. Our team of therapists work Monday to Friday 8am to 9pm, and Saturday 9am to 6pm.

Online Therapy FAQs

You can bring any issue that matters to you. Common concerns include difficult emotions, relationship problems, family conflict, work stress, grief, sexual difficulties, and unresolved experiences from the past. If you’re unsure whether therapy could help with your specific situation, you can call or email us with your query and we can help.

Most people start with weekly sessions. As things progress, you might move to fortnightly appointments or finish altogether. The frequency remains flexible and is something you and your therapist will discuss together.

This varies enormously. Some issues respond well to brief, focused work over six to ten sessions. Others benefit from longer-term therapy spanning months or years. You’re not committing to a fixed number when you start.

Standard sessions run for 50 minutes. Some therapists might offer shorter or longer sessions, depending on the type of therapy.

Confidentiality is central to the therapeutic relationship. What you discuss remains private, with narrow exceptions required by law, such as imminent risk of serious harm. Your therapist will explain these boundaries at the outset.

In Ireland, the terms are often used interchangeably. Psychotherapy sometimes implies deeper or longer-term work, while counselling may refer to more focused, shorter-term support. What matters most is finding a therapist whose approach fits your needs.

All our therapists are members of recognised professional bodies and have completed substantial training. Their qualifications are listed on their individual profiles.
