Psychotherapy Training and Accreditation

Having qualified as a psychotherapist from The Dublin Counselling and Therapy Centre in 2012, Róisín then went on and did further training with the Blackfort Adolescent Gestalt Institute. She maintains a full time private practice and is an accredited member of Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP).

She is committed to her professional development and regularly attends various workshops and training.

Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach

Róisín believes that no one single approach is the right one for each individual as we are all unique. Her approach to psychotherapy is Integrative which involves using a range of therapeutic techniques. This enables Róisín to work together with her clients to understand how things are for them and to focus on the areas in which they want to change in their life.  Róisín offers a safe, comfortable and confidential online space for her clients to explore any issues that are affecting them in their lives.

The adolescent journey is one of meaning-making and to this end, Róisín is committed to supporting the expression of the adolescent’s experience. Through this process the adolescent learns to trust his/her experience and feels acknowledged/validated as an emerging self. And so, for example, Róisín is less interested in the symptoms of the anxiety presentation and more interested in the adolescent’s self-experience and how s/he makes meaning of the anxiety.

Adolescent psychotherapy gives focus to the relational and underlying issues which are often at the heart of the adolescent’s presenting symptom issues. Róisín intervenes at both the interpersonal and intrapsychic levels of experiences and sees these presenting issues as a situation to be explored, understood and de-shamed, rather than as the description of an adolescent’s thought-behaviour experience to be modified.

Róisín does not work-with-adolescents; Her ‘client’ is not so much the adolescent as it is the “whole development” of the adolescent. The focus is the developmental process – specifically, how she can intervene to influence the situation in order to support the adolescent’s development more fully.

As an adolescent therapist, Róisín’s role is to address the wider field of the adolescent’s experience and engage ALL the key adults in the young person’s life. The first session with the adolescent will be an information gathering session and will include the parents/guardians in order to take a detailed and appropriate history.

Counselling Experience and Areas of Interest

As a qualified psychotherapist, working mostly with adolescents and their families, Róisín has supported her clients, using an integrative approach which includes Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).  Her role enables Róisín to help her clients gain insight and awareness, and as a direct result helps them to develop the skills and confidence to create a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Róisín has experience with supporting adolescents on a wide range of issues including: Depression, Anxiety, School refusal, Self harming, Suicidal  thoughts, Neurodiversity etc…
