Counselling and Psychotherapy Approach

Martina is an integrative psychotherapist who works collaboratively with her clients to customise a therapeutic approach specific to the clients’ needs.  She draws from the main theoretical models which include Humanistic and Person Centered Therapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Family Systems, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (MBCBT).

The relationship between Martina and her clients is at the centre of how she works.   She views therapy is a unique and personal process to each individual or couple.  Martina works compassionately, seeing trust as essential to ensure the individual or couple are fully supported within a safe and respectful environment.

Martina believes we are a combination of our unique individuality, our lived experiences, relationships and connections.  These experiences or relationships can be difficult, confusing and even traumatic.  In the counselling space, Martina aims to help clients make sense and navigate these challenges, to have more rewarding relationships with others and themselves, and to develop communication and assertiveness skills from a self-compassionate and authentic self.

Martina has experience and enjoys working with a very wide range of clients of different ages, backgrounds and cultures.   She has worked with the Psychotherapy Services of the HSE, Student Counselling Services of both DCU and TCD, as well as many years with individuals and couples in private practice.

Martina’s areas of interest include but are not limited to relationship difficulties (Couples Counselling), family dynamics including sibling rivalry, Work Related Stress, Students’ Issues (over 18 years), Anxiety (including Panic Attacks), Depression, Low Self-Esteem, Narcissism and it’s impact.  She is also interested in working with the body in psychotherapy.

Supervision Model

Martina brings her integrative training and work experience to her model of supervision. This means that supervision is very integrative and relational and is not confined to any one model.   This integrative model includes The 7 Eyed Model of Hawkins & Shohet, the Systems Approach of Holloway, as well as Holton’s Wisdom Model. Martina’s approach brings awareness of the needs of the supervisee, their client/s and the context. She sees supervision as a process that is collaborative, compassionate, contemplative and creative. This approach facilitates working with the caring professions and crosses the boundaries and needs of cross professional work.

Martina worked as a psychotherapist the Student Counselling Services of both D.C.U. and Trinity.  She has also worked with the Psychotherapy Services of the H.S.E. For the past number of years her work has been in private practice with clients who are dealing with issues including, work related stress, anxiety and panic, low mood, bullying, narcissistic abuse, health issues, grief and loss, addiction, relationship difficulties as well as couples work.

As a supervisor Martina has worked with both psychotherapists and supervisors in training, experienced psychotherapists and clinical nurse specialists.
