Psychotherapy Training and Accreditation

Gary holds a Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences from University College Dublin (UCD). This degree provided him with a strong foundation in understanding human behaviour, social structures, and psychological principles, which later informed his work as a psychotherapist. He also completed a Master of Science in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy with Dublin City University (DCU),

Throughout his training, Gary engaged in rigorous theoretical and practical learning, developing his skills in various psychotherapeutic modalities. His master’s program emphasised the importance of integrating different approaches to suit the individual needs of clients, fostering a flexible and client-centred approach to therapy.  Gary completed extensive supervised clinical practice, working with diverse clients across different settings. This hands-on experience was invaluable in shaping his therapeutic style and deepening his understanding of the complexities of human distress and resilience.

Gary is a pre-accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP), a recognition that reflects his commitment to professional standards, ethics, and ongoing professional development. As part of his pre-accreditation, Gary actively engages in continuous professional development (CPD) and regular supervision to ensure that his practice remains ethical, effective, and informed by the latest research and best practices.

Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach

As an integrative psychotherapist, Gary’s approach is tailored to the unique needs of each client. He draws on a variety of therapeutic modalities, including Person-Centred Therapy (PCT), Transactional Analysis (TA), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and psychodynamic approaches. This flexibility allows him to meet clients where they are, providing support that aligns with their personal experiences, challenges, and goals.

At the core of his practice is a person-centred philosophy, which prioritises empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness. Gary believes that a strong therapeutic relationship is fundamental to healing and personal growth. By creating a safe and non-judgmental space, he empower clients to explore their thoughts, emotions, and past experiences at their own pace.

Incorporating elements of Transactional Analysis helps clients understand their relational patterns and communication styles, which can be key to addressing interpersonal difficulties. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques allow Gary to support clients in identifying and challenging unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours, particularly for those struggling with anxiety and low self-esteem. Additionally, psychodynamic principles help to uncover unconscious processes that may be influencing present-day difficulties, fostering deeper self-awareness and long-term change.

Gary is passionate about bringing fresh insight and energy into his work, ensuring that clients feel heard, supported, and actively engaged in the therapeutic process. His approach is both dynamic and adaptable, allowing Gary to respond to each client’s evolving needs while maintaining a strong therapeutic foundation.

His clinical work has included private practice, community-based services, and mental health organisations, allowing Gary to develop a broad skill set in supporting clients across different life stages and circumstances.

One of his key areas of interest is trauma-informed therapy. Gary is deeply committed to working with individuals who have experienced various forms of trauma, including childhood adversity, relational trauma, and post-traumatic stress.
