What Is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity refers to the natural and valuable differences in the ways people’s brains work. This perspective recognises that variations in thinking, learning, and behaviour, such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and others, are part of the normal spectrum of human experience. Instead of viewing these differences as deficits, neurodiversity encourages understanding and appreciation of unique strengths and challenges.

Neurodiversity in the Home

Parents of neurodivergent children and teens often encounter a variety of challenges that can affect not only their child but the whole family.

At times, these families feel overwhelmed by daily struggles, but with the right help and advice, they can move forward and become stronger together. Navigating “big” emotions can be challenging. It often helps to remember that every child communicates in their own way. When families focus more on understanding those signals rather than trying to “fix” behaviours, everyone feels more heard and connected. Even slight changes at home, like having open conversations or making routines more flexible, can make a big difference.

· Sleep disruption impacting the whole family

· Anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or persistent tension at home

· Navigating school communication and making advocacy decisions

· Feeling unsure what to do next or which battles to prioritise

How Therapy Can Support You & Your Family

Whether the duration of support is brief or ongoing, the emphasis remains on enhancing comprehension, strengthening decision-making capabilities, and cultivating sustainable family relationships. Viewing behaviour as communication rather than defiance enables families to maintain key connections and implement adjustments beneficial to all members.

When families face these ongoing issues, it is common to feel overwhelmed and stuck

in “firefighting” mode, constantly reacting, but unsure how to create lasting change. Parent Therapy and exploration can provide a supportive space to move from crisis to clarity.
