Counselling Experience and Areas of Interest

Mary has over 10 years of experience as a psychotherapist. She works with adults experiencing depression, anxiety, stress, relationship issues, loss and bereavement, bullying, low self esteem as well as any other life issues that may impact the person’s ability to function to their full potential in any area of their life. Mary began to focus on her own personal development in 1999 and undertook a 2-year Certificate in Interpersonal Communication and Relationship Studies in U.C.C with Dr Tony Humphreys, Clinical Psychologist. At that time as a parent of three young children, being ‘the best mother’ she could was integral for her and through the course she came to realise how vital a person’s family environment is in determining their level of self esteem. In 2011 she began her counselling training with a view to continuing her own self development and also learning to help other people raise their level of self esteem something she struggled with personally.

Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach

Mary works with the following humanistic therapy modalities: Person Centered Approach, Gestalt Therapy, Attachment Theory, Transactional Analysis, Mindfulness, Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Polyvagal theory (Co-regulation). Mary offers a humanistic and integrative approach that emphasises the importance of a therapeutic relationship providing a sense of safety, connection and trust. It is the relationship between the therapist and client that supports the removing of obstacles to their healing and growth. Her goal is to listen empathetically and to offer a safe, confidential, non-judgmental and supportive environment where emotional difficulties can be explored and worked through in a way that facilitates the client to understand how they operate in the world and empower themselves to have choices and autonomy in the way they live their lives.

Psychotherapy Training and Accreditation

Mary has a BA(Honours) degree in Counselling & Psychotherapy (2015) from Cork Institute of Technology. Some recent trainings Mary has undertaken.  In 2021, A Year of Polyvagal with Deb Dana.  She   completed 2 modules of EMDR training this year.     In 2022 A Year of Nurturing the Heart with the Brain in Mind with Bonnie Badenoch, Therapeutic Presence and Polyvagal Theory weekend workshop – Dr Shari Geller.  The Heroic intention of Addiction – 6 webinars – Liam O’Mahony.   In 2023 to date Mary has undertaken a Family Constellation weekend workshop and a 1-Day workshop on Working Therapeutically with gender non-conforming clients. Mary has completed further training workshops including Gestalt Therapy, NARM (Introduction to NeuroAffective Relational Model), Internal Family Systems (IFS) and a Mindfulness training – From Shame to Self Worth and Suicide and Understanding Self Harm.  She holds a Certificate in Somatic Experiencing (2018) Mary is committed to ongoing professional development.   She has currently signed up for The Heart of Trauma with Bonnie Badenoch (5, 3-hour webinars).   Mary intends to re-take ‘A Year of Polyvagal’ with Deb Dana during 2023. Mary is a fully accredited member of IACP (Irish Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy) (M11343).
