Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach

Aisling works from a humanistic perspective. She uses a mostly non-directive, ‘child centered’ developmentally appropriate approach, towards children. This allows children to develop self-confidence in themselves and in their choices. Children can express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe, supportive environment. Her methods are integrative, meaning she uses elements of different therapeutic approaches to tailor to children’s needs, using psychological theories and counselling practices while using ‘play’ as a tool for assessment, change and healing. Children can communicate how they are feeling in a symbolic way for them to process emotions and resolve any conflicts they may be feeling. When working with older children, Aisling uses a more directive approach that helps to understand what might be going on for them on a deeper level.

Aisling believes that the therapeutic relationship between the client and the therapist is the most important tool in the ‘play room.’ The child overtime develops trust in Aisling and in return feels more comfortable to let Aisling understand their inner world/conflicts either through symbols, play or talking.

Aisling offers a gentle, understanding, empathetic and non-judgmental approach with children.
