Her experience, as a therapist in Pieta House, provided her with a competence in working with many varied, difficult and complex issues with clients from different cultures and diverse backgrounds dealing with issues resulting in self-harm and suicidal ideation. Bernie also facilitates workshops, for professionals, the prison services and the public, on Self-harm and Suicidal Ideation (Prevention, Intervention, Postvention) and Bereavement.

In addition, she has a particular interest in working with people who have experienced coercive control and narcissistic abuse within their personal relationships.

Bernie is currently working with couples using the Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) model.

Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach

Bernie likes to learn about people and from people in a non-judgemental but real and empathetic way – she uses an integrative approach to therapy including Cognitive Behavoural Therapy (CBT) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), adopting the style that best suits an individual’s needs. She is passionate about people making changes in their own lives and living the life they truly want to live in the present moment.
