Psychotherapy Training and Accreditation
Nicola received a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Counselling & Psychotherapy from Cork Institute of Technology (CIT), and holds a Master of Arts in Integrated Psychotherapy with CIT.
Within her training Nicola studied a variety of therapeutic approaches and theoretical inputs such as Gestalt, Person Centred, Attachment, Trauma Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Polyvagal, Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Nicola has also completed further trainings including Online and Telephone Counselling, Assessment & Treatment of Suicidality, working with Trauma including the Neuro Affective Relational Model for Healing Attachment, and Understanding & Working with Complex Developmental Trauma & Dissociation.
She is an accredited member of the (IACP) Irish Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (M13650) and as such, she adheres to their Code of Ethics
Counselling and Psychotherapeutic Approach
Nicola works in a Humanistic and Person Centred way which means that it is her core belief that her Client has all of the answers and resources within themselves to overcome hardship, pain & despair.
As an Integrative Psychotherapist, Nicola has committed to studying several approaches to therapy in order to build a comprehensive toolkit from which to draw, and to ensure that each Client is worked with in a way that respects their individual uniqueness.
She works in a collaborative way with her Client to support them through their issues. She encourages self-compassion and courage in identifying the changes they want to make to improve their life & relationships while respecting their own wisdom.
Nicola believes that the relationship between the Therapist and Client is fundamental to healing, and she provides a safe and non-judgemental space within which her Client can experience consistency, reliability and sensitivity.
Counselling Experience and Areas of Interest
Nicola works with adults, 18 years old and upwards.
While undertaking her Degree, Nicola worked in ARC Cancer support where she supported individuals bereaved by Cancer, and with those who had received a Cancer diagnosis. Some of the presenting issues she worked with during this time included Grief, Loss and Shock.
Nicola also worked in University College Cork as a Student Counsellor where she supported a diverse range of 3rd level students presenting with a variety of issues including anxiety, depression, stress, LGBTI+ issues, relationship problems, childhood issues including physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect.
Since graduating Nicola has worked in private practice where she sees Clients online, and in her rooms in Cork City. Some of the presenting issues she continues to work with include LGBTI + issues, Sexual Health, Anxiety, Depression, Grief, Loss, Abuse, Stress, Trauma and Abuse.
Nicola has a special interest in working with anyone who is seeking holding & support through grief or loss, and with anyone who is looking to make sense of and process their emotions. She is also excited to work with anyone who would like to learn how to accept responsibility for their own life, without shaming or blaming themselves, in order to gain the ability to make the changes they need to live a full and vibrant life.
