Adoption

The experience of Adoption can be an issue for individuals who were placed for adoption; birth parents; siblings or other family members. While unique to each person, often feelings of loss, sadness, anger, rejection, abandonment, self-esteem and attachment issues may be experienced in some manner or at some point in time. Our sense of identity;  that sense of “belonging” or “not belonging” which are central to our sense of self, can also be adversely affected.  For some individuals an acknowledgement of our feelings around adoption, brings with it, a level of further emotional distress as secrecy, shame, fear, guilt, broader family or relationship issues may come more into our focus.

This is by no means an exclusive list, as these are difficulties that are common to all individuals. However, for someone struggling or wishing to explore their experience of adoption, counselling affords the opportunity to do so in a safe, supportive relationship and environment.
